Something I value today is enjoying my life to the fullest and this includes the smallest of things that we ignore in our daily routine. However, I’ve gained a fresh perspective on how I view my life now. Our preliminary results suggest that visualizing a vein during PIC insertion, may result in lower pain during the procedure and may reduce the use of analgesia in children.“It is hard for me to say if everything around me has become more positive or even negative. CONCLUSION: Pain caused by PIC insertion is of main concern in patients with high DIVA scores. Additional data is required for statistical validation. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of complications. While the pain score is lower in the Veinlite group, additional data is required for better statistical analysis.

The mean pain scores reported by the children was lower 7.94 in the VG and 9.06 in the SG (p: 0.629). Eight patients were in the Stanard of Care group and eight were in the Veinlite group. RESULTS: Preliminary findings from the first 16 patients studied are presented. Data will be analyzed using the student t-test for the amount of pain in the VG and SCG groups. The primary data collected is a measure of pain during the PIC line insertion and secondary data is the complications associated with PIC line insertion in the two groups. A total of 60 patients will be included in this study. Patients who are between 5 to 18 years of age, and, who are rated with a DIVA score of 4 and higher, will be randomly assigned to Veinlite (VG) or standard of care group (SCG).

METHOD: A randomized clinical study is being conducted at our hospital in children who present in the Children Surgical Clinic for PIC insertion. Our purpose, with this new study, is to determine if the pain associated with PIC insertion can be reduced in the Difficult IV Access (DIVA) patients by the use of a vein imaging device.

PURPOSE: We have previously shown that the use of a Vein Finder (Veinlite PEDI), can improve the first time success rate for peripheral intravenous catheters (PIC) insertion in children (1).
